Epidemiology of Compassion and Love

Sponsored by the Task Force for Global Health....

For centuries, thoughtful analysis of ‘love’ and ‘compassion’ was reserved for philosophers, religious scholars, and poets. Recently, however, the disciplines of psychology, sociology, and neuroscience have begun to yield fresh insights into the nature and mechanisms of love and compassion. Despite growing, multidisciplinary interest in these concepts, epidemiology – the scientific discipline that undergirds public health – remains largely absent from this discourse.1 With the support of The Fetzer Institute, the Task Force for Global Health is hosting this meeting to explore the potential contribution of epidemiology to our understanding of these concepts and to the development of tools and metrics that serve to foster love and compassion in organizations, communities, and health systems. The meeting will begin on Wednesday, January 8th, and conclude midday on Friday, January 10th. The structure of the meeting will be divided between presentations and breakout sessions on the conceptual frameworks and case definitions of the compassion and love, epidemiologic methods, and potential sources of data that would allow us to classify compassion and love geospatially.

Human Flourishing Program Director of Empirical Research Matthew Lee and Research Affiliate Eric Kim are both featured guests at the conference.
