Director, the Flourishing Network
Matthew T. Lee, PhD, is the Director of the Flourishing Network and a Research Associate with the Human Flourishing Program and a Professor of the Social Sciences and Humanities at Baylor University. He specializes in the integration of the wisdom of the humanities with rigorous social science, with research interests spanning love, flourishing, wellbeing, benevolent service, and leadership. His work focuses particularly on the relationship between love and flourishing, which involves whole human well-being in Beloved Communities and thriving ecosystems, and examines the factors that contribute to a flourishing life. His latest books are Leadership for Flourishing (Oxford, 2025), "Transcending Crisis by Attending to Care, Emotion, and Flourishing" (Routledge, 2023), and Measuring Well-Being: Interdisciplinary Perspectives from the Social Sciences and Humanities (Oxford, 2021). His research has been published in journals such as American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Criminology, Humanistic Management Journal, Journal of Positive Psychology, Journal of Transformative Education, Nature Mental Health, Scientific Reports, Social Psychology Quarterly, and Sociological Quarterly. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and communities of practice, especially with the Flourishing Network that he founded in 2019, Matthew is also involved in broader impact efforts with the goal of helping individuals and groups pursue ecosystem-wide flourishing. He earned his PhD in Sociology and MA in Criminology from the University of Delaware, as well as a BA in Psychology from Kent State University.
