Tim Lomas
Research Scientist
Tim Lomas, PhD, has been a Psychology Research Scientist with the Human Flourishing Program since 2021, and is also the Project Manager for the Global Flourishing Study. He specializes in cross-cultural psychology, with research interests ranging from happiness and balance/harmony to language, art, and philosophy. His work focuses particularly on how people experience and conceptualize wellbeing across cultures, with an interest in both universals (i.e., what is shared in common) and particulars (i.e., what is more unique to a particular culture). Besides exploring these interests through the Global Flourishing Study, he has also done so through various other projects, including creating a cross-cultural lexicography of untranslatable words relating to wellbeing, and being a core member of the Global Wellbeing Initiative (a collaboration involving Gallup that aims to incorporate non-Western perspectives on wellbeing into the World Poll). Since 2013 he has authored over 160 papers, as well as 15 books (including edited ones), with the most recent being a book on Happiness for the MIT Press Essential Knowledge Series. He earned his PhD from the University of Westminster, UK, in 2012, as well as an MSc and an MA in Psychology from the University of Edinburgh (in 2005 and 2002 respectively).
