Sophia Town
Sophia Town, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of organizational behavior at the Gabelli School of Business, Fordham University. Her research aims to humanize business education by fostering the knowing, doing and being of wisdom and flourishing at work. She uses qualitative methods to explore topics grounded in phronesis (i.e., practical wisdom) that advance theory while contributing to the social good. Central topics include discerning leadership, emotions at work, organizational paradox, and transformative pedagogy. In 2018, Dr. Town was named the Jeanne Lind Herberger Fellow for transformative research on work and life. She currently serves as a research fellow for the Center for Humanistic Management at Fordham University and the Center for Mindfulness, Compassion, & Resilience at Arizona State. In the classroom, Dr. Town’s curriculum incorporates transformative learning (e.g., critical reflexivity, mindfulness) and is guided by the question: “How can we develop compassionate leaders in service of a flourishing world?” In 2018, she received the university Teaching Excellence Award and, in 2021, the Dean’s Award for Teaching Innovation. Dr. Town’s research and curriculum development have been supported by the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics, the Transformation Project, and the International Association of Jesuit Universities.
